Speaking With One Voice
Franchisors have a lot of difficult tasks. They need to care for and nurture franchisees, handle everything at the corporate level and roll out initiatives that have to take place across the country or even the world. There’s a lot of supervision that goes into that.
Harder to supervise but no less important is the social media piece of every franchise’s marketing efforts. When every franchisee has a Facebook page, a website or a Twitter account, it can be difficult to keep everyone on the same page. After all, you don’t want a Burger King franchisee in Iowa railing against corporate or promoting a competing restaurant because he’s friends with the owner.
That speaks to the importance of having a policy and ensuring franchisees are aware of it:
“If you have no policy, [franchisees] will do whatever they think they should do,” says Mr. Carpenter. “It may be wonderful, but it may be not.”
Carry this over to your work as a franchisee. If your employees don’t know the policy, they could put something embarrassing out there. The beauty and the terror of the Internet is that nothing goes away once it’s posted, so it’s better to strike preemptively.
Mechanics For The Lord?
Every business needs a unique hook to get ahead. With a name like Christian Brothers, you can probably guess where this one is going.
The company is taking Dallas-Fort Worth by storm with some 25 locations, all of them owned by Christians. If this seems like kind of an exclusionary business practice…well, you haven’t been to Texas. Christian Brothers is taking off in a big way because of its value system, adherence to the faith and excellent auto repair ethos. The latter matters a lot, of course.
Will this play nationwide? My gut says no, but I’ve been wrong before. The Southern states and Texas in particular are friendly places for Christian businesses, but that’s not necessarily the case in the upper Midwest, West Coast and East Coast. You have to wish them luck and give them credit for trying something like this, though.
